What does UV400 mean?
Your sunglasses must provide protection from ultraviolet radiation, a component of sunlight that contributes to eye disease. The FDA, the government agency that oversees sunglass manufacture and sales in the U.S., recommends you look for sunglasses with lenses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation. The label should read either UV 400 or 100% UV protection.

What is the history of optics?
Sunglasses of the 70's, 80's and 90's Era
The history of optics dates back more than 100 years. The main function of early optics was to serve as protection for the eyes. It was in the 70's that optics came into "style". And they were not only the functional feature, but the design of the frame that became an important part of fashion. The 70's introduced the innovation of lighter weight plastic lenses that made it possible for designers to manufacture glasses with large lenses that were both very fashionable, yet comfortable.
The 80's ushered in the use of titanium used to make frames and some high-end designers, like Dior, began manufacturing frameless glasses. The 80's was a time when design and quality of sunglasses reached its peak.
Colorful and playful designers were indicative of the beginning of the 90's. Designs were detailed. The 90's also introduced a material called Titan-Flex. This unique material had a form memory allowing the glasses frame to bend back to its original form.
There have been a handful of designers who have remained true to their principles. Ray Ban and Persol continue to manufacture their glasses and sunglasses using mineral-glazed lenses. In spite of their heavier weight, these lenses tend to be more resistant to scratches and can maintain a glossy shine for decades.
